Do you know how your horse keeps warm?

Winter is now in full force with temperatures constantly dipping  below zero.  We keep warm by bundling up and raising our themostats, but do you know how your horse keeps warm during cold weather.  As it gets colder, your horse needs to consume more hay as he keeps warm by digesting hay.

If calories and nutrients are in short supply, the horse’s body will send nutrients to more critical organs rather than skin and cost. To combat this, in the winter, feed your horse about 2 lbs. more hay  for every 10° the temperature drops below 40°, which is the horse’s critical temperature.
